Earth Hour

Recently there email about "TNB intend to sue WWF for organizing Earth Hour" circulating around. I received quite a number of emails from friends on this.

After Google-ed for a while, well, found out that its NOT true.

I believe the content of the email originated from http://nose4news.wordpress.com/2010/03/25/tnb-to-sue-wwf-over-earth-hour/. But I guess the owner deleted the flaming post.

The effect of Earth Hour on Power Generated?

Theres however a news about how much Earth Hour actually contributed to reduction of electricity production - ZERO. Simply because the energy that produced by power plants are not reduced, thus Earth Hour has zero effect on change of carbon emissions.... more.

How much that 1 hour contributed?

Read more about the statistics at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_hour#Measurement_of_reduction_in_electricity_use

Earth Hour is NOT a bad idea.

I'm NOT posting this to show that "Earth Hour" is a bad idea. Just to suggest that maybe

  1. Earth Hour organizer can liaise with power producers to reduce the power production. Maybe in terms of reducing the electricity reserve margin.
  2. Organize Earth Hour (or similar events) more frequent to have actual impact on the power consumption. I mean 1 hour a year is just too insignificant. (But still a good idea for "awareness", once a year...)

GPGP

Have you ever wondered where all the garbage that we throw into the sea went to?
This is where all of them 'gathered' - Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Its not too late to save the world. There are a lot of efforts going on out there by various country.
  1. Lesotho - the poorest country, is proportionally the one that invest most in its people's education.
  2. Qatar - one of the richest states has opened up the best universities.
  3. Bangladesh - founded a bank that lends only to the poor. In 30 years, it has changed the lives of 150 million people.
  4. Antarctica - no country can claim - a natural reserve devoted to peace and science.
  5. Governments - have acted to protect nearly 2% of territorial waters (not much, but 2 times more than 10 years ago).
  6. South Korea - national reforestation program restored the forest destroyed during war.
  7. Costa Rice - disarmed military, resources devoted on land conservation, education, ecotourism and protection of primary forest.
  8. Gabon - enforces selective logging - not more than 1 tree every hectare.
  9. Germany (Freiburg) - 5000 people live in first eco-friendly district (with solar houses).
  10. Mumbai - joined the eco-friendly concept.
  11. NZ, Iceland, Austria, Sweden - has made renewable resources their top priority.
  12. Denmark - prototype of coal-fired plant that release carbon into the soil.
  13. Iceland - Electricity plant powered by Earth's heat - Geothermal.
  14. Denmark - Wind power plant off coast - produces 20% of the country's electricity.
  15. USA, China, India, Germany, Spain - biggest investors in renewable energy.
  16. USA - Solar power plant at Mojave Desert

Another environmental video on that. Just skip to 1:21:20 if you want to find out more about the efforts carried out so far.

TED: Bill Gates on Energy: Innovating to Zero

Factors that contribute to CO2 emission.

Theres little we can do about
1. Population - increases with time.
2. Services Per Person - increases with time.

But, we can make a difference in
3. Service Per Energy - by better energy saving inventions.
4. CO2 Per Unit Energy - reduce carbon emission, with renewable energies, Nuclear energies.

Finally, not just Bill Gates's wish. I'm sure is everyone else's wish.
