What is RAG?

For those who don't know what is NUS RAG, heres a well documented video from Eusoffworks.

The video shows the whole 3-month RAG process in general.
  1. Brainstorming
  2. Design
  3. Construction
  4. Cladding
  5. Presentation
Of course, the timeline for each halls/faculties are completely different. Depending on the main factor - manpower.

For KRhome (2008/2009), the detailed process is as follow:

Should RAG Day be held off-campus?

Saw a friend posted about voting Rag to be held in SRC permanently (and not outside of NUS).

Replied to the post, and thought of sharing my thoughts here too.

---

The original idea of RAG is to show appreciation to the public for donating. If its held internally, only NUS students knows about it, then it defeats the purpose of "thanking public" in the form of celebrations and performances.

As for the performances, each float has its own message to convey, sometimes not just to NUS students, but to everyone.

The cost of the floats are so high (comparable to Chingay floats). Judging from the feedbacks (in terms of resources and manpower) from all participation bodies (PB) over recent years, I think this "tradition" will not be able to sustain any longer, if its going to be just "another NUS-internal event". Even this year, if its not a combined effort, how many halls actually agreed to take part.

People generally think that RAG a waste of resources. Its more saddening when those words came from NUS students or the students who participated in the event themselves. They don't seem to appreciate the art behind of float creation, the performances, the dances, the technical details of building float...

I think its worth the effort to push this event out to the public. So more people can appreciate it.

NUS held RAG Day outside twice (the last was at Padang, 2007). If those 2 experiences tells us that its not worth it, and the logistic cost is really so huge that its not justifiable, then yeah, then the PBs should strongly suggest to NUSSU to stop holding it outside.

I actually noticed that there are a lot of tourists (I know they are tourist! Haha!) and exchange students, stayed and cheered till the end. I don't think they know the original purpose of the event. But looks like they enjoyed the performance, as much as I do.

---

Side note: Ah, I should remind myself that I've already left NUS and stop worrying about the sustainability of RAG. Just let the younger ppl, who are still involved to decide whats best for them, and RAG. If its going to be transformed, or gone, just let it be. Time changes, people changes.

(Raya) Gathering

Spent this year's Raya with rag (KRhome) friends at CCK - Kam and Hoongsoon's place. We gathered around noon to buy foods from from nearby Fair Price, and cook steamboat for lunch+dinner. Super full, because all the food cost near $200. Oh, after that still got ice-cream as dessert.

Glad to meet up with all of them to catch up with one another.

Special thanks to Hoongsoon for subsidizing, and because our conversation topic for the day :)

NUS RAG Day 2010

Took me a while to blog about this - NUS RAG Day 2010.

The overall standard for halls, and even faculties are improved. Maybe because the float structure was outsourced this year... hAhAhA... But glad that I went back to be part of this 1 whole day event (last time was half a day).

In conjunction with YOG this year, the whole RAG Day was so extravagant, with all the fireworks, performance by external parties, flame arrival/welcoming ceremony... and a lot of paparazies... hAhAhA

Anyway, these are the performances on RAG day which I think is good, and stand out. Credits to kpchen for all the videos. :)

Personally, I would prefer the performances by King Edward 7 (KE7) and Kent Ridge Hall (KR) than Eusoff Hall (EH).

There are a lot of elements incorporated in the dance (by KE7), and represents the past and present of Korea - Traditional fan dance, Tekwondo, K-pop - and the integration of all these elements in modern Korea. Definitely a lot of things see, compared to other performances.

Just my 2 cents. :)

p/s: At first wanted to comment of each of the performance... but, ah, lazy... will post again some other time. :)

Comparing

This post is dedicated to my fellow raggers in the management team.

Do not compare us with past years RAG!
Do not always talks about how good are the past RAGs.
This is different batch, we have our own SOP (standard operation procedure)
...
Does those phrases sound familiar to you?

To me, yes! In fact, hear them every year from the fresh-raggers.

-----

Everyone join RAG for different goals and purposes. Some wanted to win, some because of friends, some wanted to enhance resume, some wanted to secure a place in campus, some just simply want to past their time. It is hard to bring everyone together towards a common direction.

You might say, “So, what? Just set a common goal for everyone!”
Goal for designers - win all the awards;
Goal for engineers – enjoy the process…

So how do you actually achieve that?

Win all the awards? EASY, just design a super zai float!
Enjoy the process? Just organize suppers, more outings…

As simple as it might seem, but… how does a super zai float look like?

Maybe as senior, you already know the standard and expectation for RAG. You already know how a GOOD (and super zai) float SHOULD look like. But that doesn’t apply to the rest of the team who are new to RAG.

To you, you know the fact as much as you wanted the design of the float to be super complex and high-tech, at the end of the day, you will still need to pull yourself back to the constrains of the capability of the engineering team. But to the new designers, the might not know this CRUEL fact. They might just want their ideas to run wild. When they idea cannot be materialized, then everyone starts to blame one another.

To you, you know how important it is to give simple and idiot proof designs/drawings to the engineers. But to the new department heads, the might think that it is fine to just pass down the “un-simplified” drawings to the members. They might not know the fact that different people has different ability. When end-product does not match the designs, then everyone starts to blame one another.

To you, you know how important it is to get every straight line straight, how hard is it to get a straight line! But to the new float engineers, they might think that it is perfectly fine to be “roughly straight”. When the structures become unstable, then everyone starts to blame one another.

To you, you know how important it is for all the claddings to be as accurate as possible to every mm. But to the new materials engineer, they might not know how important it is to get every mm right. They might just think that it does not matter to off just a cm of two; it will not make any difference; Can always trim along the way… When the claddings become incoherent, then everyone starts to blame one another.

To you, you know how important to do correction (or more precisely – REDO) when there is error. But to the engineers who have been working days and nights, they might not know how precise and professional their measurement must be in order not the let the errors accumulate. When the errors avalanched to the situation that can never be saved, then everyone starts to blame one another.

To you, you know how important to get enough sleep so that can concentrate on work the next day. But to the new members, the might not know. They might think they can spend the night follow up with movies, chatting, etc.; It is they welfare. When productivity goes down, and targets getting delayed, then everyone starts to blame one another.

To you, you know how important it is for everyone to put in their 100% effort so that the float can be finished in time. But to the new members, they might not think the same way. To them, they have no reason to work so hard. In the mist of hardship, they are still entitled to enjoy their life during weekend: clubbing, shopping, hang out with friends, birthday parties... There is simply no reason to work more than 16 hours a day. When RAG day comes, the float cannot finish in time, now everyone start to panic!

Different people have different view on the standard of RAG. It is rather abstract to just say “to win” when everyone have different impression of the standard of the winning float. It is rather abstract to just say “to enjoy the process” when everyone have different imprint of the term “enjoy”.

Just remember, no one is COMPARING you to the past batches. The story of the past is just MERELY a reference for everyone in the team; A reference so that everyone in the team has a clearer picture of the goals; The goals which are not meant to REACH, but to breakthrough.

Be open-minded.

If you are the leader, won’t you want the BEST for your team?

Just two cents from me.

I wonder

Talked to a friend just now. We talked about the committee that he joined during Dec holiday. He thought it’s going to be an enjoyable experience, but in the end things turned out to be not good as he expected. Although the whole event seems to be a great success, he told me that there are a lot of small small problems going on back at the management level, the incapability and irresponsibility of some which results in other have to cover their a**.

He is just not happy with the attitude of some 'leaders' who take things lightly, with the mentality that its-just-small-issue-so-don't-need-to-care. He thought he could tolerate with it in the beginning, after all, it’s just a month project. Conclusion, he thinks that as leader, we must be firm, plan ahead as detail as possible, and foresee and anticipate the possible problem that might arise. The head must be picky! Which I agree with him. (This reminds me of W and ZY. They are good leaders. They are quite picky also. And most important, they always do fine-grained planning, and manage to think of the possible problem along the way. Enjoyed working under them :))

Still, he was delighted that event ended with no major problem.

---

This reminds me of the new batch of raggers. Sometimes I wonder whether will they have the similar mentality "its-just-small-issue-so-don't-need-to-care"? Actually I'm just worry about them being not aggressive enough to fight for what they want. Worry that they will missed out the small-small-things in planning. Sometimes I wonder whether the new batch has the same mentality as me and my team back then when we are year ones. Still fresh. Just wonder...

But then, like one of them said, "Maybe it’s your own wrong judgement" :)

KR RAG

My journey of RAG in Kent Ridge Hall.

Year 0 - KRonos
Mechanism controller for cylinder

The float that inspires a lot of Raggers and Floaters, including me of course.
I spent most of my orientation at dinning hall, helping out, with the intention to be the first few freshman to see this so called "float" structure. Finally I was chosen as one of the helper for the main mechanism, along with weliam. My first impression of KRonos - precision structure, with insanely intricate cladding!
Still remember on RAG Day 2006 itself, before entering presentation area, Boon Sern, the CE for KRonos, shout from the cylinder of KRonos - "Even the pulley break, we will not break!". In presentation box, witnessing that pair of wings that spread out of the float body (cylinder), I told myself that RAG will definitely be part of my Hall Life for the coming few years.

KRonos @ Plaza Singapura

Year 1 - Flight
Assistant Chief Enginner

First attempt in building something out of nothing. A lot happened throughout the whole 3 months. Sweet, bitter, joy, disappointment; witnessing how people changed for better, for worse. RAG its not as simple as I thought.
Lack of proper preparation, inexperience team, on week six, I knew the whole team were marching towards a pit of fire. On RAG day itself, its disheartening to hear our neighbour, SH, swept almost all the awards. But, what make me burst into tears is when I pass by EH's dancer's resting area, the dancers ran in front of me make fun of me.
Nevertheless, Flight is the reason for I continue on, to catch up with my dream, to correct the mistakes I've made.

Flight @ Padang

Year 2 - KRhome
Float Engineer

Things were much better this year, Weliam, ZY, Jeff, and I know what we want to focus on this time round. We started off early, identified the winning formula, and worked hard during the whole 3 months, even to the extend burning our Sunday rest time. On RAG Day itself, we won big. To be frank, I knew there will be one big winner when our float arrive at SRC, its either us, or EH. I was so worried, until the first award was announced :)

KRhome @ SRC

Year 3 - KRavings
Helper

Involved in the early stage brainstorming. Its really a different experience as an "advisor" I would say. I tried as much as possible not to provide any input, and let the idea flow within raggers themselves.
KRavings is a good float, the idea, colours and the intricacy of the claddings. But there are few winning factors that KRavings missed out during presentation. On top of that, competition was tough this year and, specially from KE. KEnovo is definitely a very very good float, with the creativity of the claddings (and compilation of the idea from the past winning floats. =) ). Actually, I like KE's float all these while, just that they were out shined during presentation - dance.

KRhome off to Kallang

Saw one of weliam's post: off-to-kallang...

KRhome at Kallang 了!!! Along with Christmas Reverie (Eusoff's).

Going Chingay has been one of my dream after I saw KRonos displayed at PS and subsequently being modified to showcase to public during Chingay 2 year back.

To me myself, Chingay doesn't really mean anything at all. Sometimes I wonder, whats in it for me (computing student) actually?

Maybe ,what I really hope for from Chingay is to uphold KR's (especially KR RAG Committee's) reputation while I'm around, still staying in KR. Don't know why, my feeling towards KR and RAG is similar to the feeling of 爱国精神 that teacher teach in primary and secondary school. The love that makes me willing to sacrifice for 'em...

satisfied... totally

Still fresh in memory, NUS RAG & Flag 06/07 on August 12, 2006.

After that day, I told myself, I want freshies to experience the euphoria that I experienced back then. Somehow, the dream wasn't materialized last year...

This year, we (Flight and other seniors) tried hard, very very hard, since the beginning to ensure that this dream of us will become reality. Still remember our first meeting back then during production period, endless meeting throughout the sem, sleepless nights throughout the whole 3 months...

Glad that everything came true as what we (at least me) pictured in our mind: A Strong team of happy raggers, raggers (almost everyone) marched with the float to SRC, the tense atmosphere during touch-up time, motivational speech by weliam before everyone chiong into the waiting box 1, tears of joy after presentation, everyone holding hand forming a circle, praying hard, just before results were announced, and the roar of "K, K, K, K, RRRR" even before the mc announce the awards, swept all major awards for RAG, everyone KO-ed and slept beside the float after everything ended, and of course - Chingay!

One word "圆梦"... after 2 years... satisfied... totally =)

Question...

Sometimes I wonder, am I weak? emotionally?
Just can't hold back my tears everytime I watch those RAG videos.

Its not like I've done A LOT of things until now. What I've been through definitely cannot compare to those seniors, who have spent 3 years, or even more, just to do RAG... Why can't I just like other people? Can control their emotions... smile, without shedding any tears.

Materializing Imagination

The great successful men of the world have used their imaginations. They think ahead and create their mental picture, and then go to work materializing that picture in all its details, filling in here, adding a little there, altering this bit and that bit, but steadily building, steadily building.

- Robert Collier

Very well, this will be my inspiration for RAG.

update - Target

Quite happy just now while doing RAG. Wingken and Weliam bet on the possibility of us to finish our target by morning. Wingken confidently says we can finish the structure in time. Hmm, in the end, Wingken lost. We couldnt finish it in time >.< So I guess tomorrow Wingken will change his surname to GOH Wingken, instead of YAU, while Weliam saved his coins from can drinks.

Glad that there are new things happened everyday. Before this, I always thought that days in RAG will be more or less the same everyday. Everyday do welding, cutting, grinding, cladding, testing... but it turned out that RAG is quite fun actually. Get to know different people with different personality (but last year's RAGgers have more variety of personality than this year for sure).

The most fun part RAG period is supper time. When everyone sit down, relax, eat and most important - chit-chat, or I prefer to call it gossip. Haha, everyday got different things to gossip about - Who-love-who, who-hate-who, who-argued-with-who... but of course the topic-targets are those RAG members. Quite fun, to relax a bit, laugh at others, and maybe own self, and to strengthen the bonding between RAGGERs.

PHOTOSHOOT

Took our photo yesterday afternoon. Nothing much to talk about. Just normal Committee-photo and the "KR RAG" letters formed by people.

updates [RAG]

Reached room around 6am just now. Damn shag lar... start work around 1300 and end at 0600. Cool. My brain stopped working around 5am. Just do all the grinding and welding without using brain... swt...

going to sleep now. Sien, no time to do some revision for Jap. Sleeping time also not enough, for me lar...

But glad that we are progressing slowly and steadily, with a bit behind schedule...

21st Birthday

Today its my 21st birthday.

Today, doing RAG and a bit frustrated about the quality of the work we worked so far. Everything seems to like "China-quality". Feel like telling the engineers to redo their work, but feel that shouldn't order them around too much, since they also put in a lot of effort in doing those. I'm not a very very perfectionist person. I keep on telling myself, "its okay, after cladding, everything will look nice". Not sure whether its true or not.

The whole day, I keep on asking myself, "Why am I so easily feel frustrated today? nothing really frust me that much before this. Is it because of my birthday is coming?"

I don't know what am I thinking that time. Am I hoping to hear people discussing about my birthday-is-coming?

Birthday

Around 12.10, We Liam came over to RAG area and asked me to discuss/confirm the design of the float with him. I've been running, or should I say walking from RAG area to Recre Room for quite a number of times to get the drawings, and delegate to the engineers to do.

When we entered Recre Room, the lights were half lighted. I didnt think much about it as I was still a bit frust over Weliam's idea to change the dimension of the float again... I didnt notice the cake, Chocolate Cake which is on the table. I walked to Weliam's table. That time, I heard the rest which is in the room discussing about why bringing me at the wrong time. I stunned, question mark came out of my mind. Then, I remembered that its my birthday already, 10 minutes pass 12. Then I realize Brian was in Recre room. (I think he is here to help sing birthday song for me, or is it coincidence that he came to discuss stuff? Haha, I dont know.) Then, I notice the cake which is on the table... I'm surprised. Really.

Funny.

Haha, actually they still havnt finish preparing, I think. I was brought into the room a bit early. Funny. After that, they asked the rest of the engineers from RAG Area to Recre Room. I was forced to go out from the room and come in again, and pretend that I didnt know about the 'party'.

When I went out from the room, Kheng Guan came, and wanted to enter the room. But they closed the door and still 'preparing' inside. I guess its because its abit noisy, so they cant hear Kheng Guan's call. And by the time they opened the door, and shouted "Happy Birthday"... Kheng Guan stunned. Perhaps all of them also stunned.

Haha.

Kheng Guan turned to me and wish me Happy Birthday. Then he tried to ask Eric for short talk. But I think the room was still noisy, and Eric couldnt hear him. Haha...
In the end, Kheng Guan gave up and went upstairs for meeting. ^^
Super Funny...

They opened the door once more. This time, I walked inside, try to pretend that I'm very surprised. They sang Birthday Song as I walked in. Then I made my birthday wishes. 3 Wishes. Can't mention it out, or else it will not come true, thats what Grandma says.

Then I cut the cake. Then they ask me to choose a girl to "share the chocolate piece on the cake". But paisei lar... In the end, I chose Sean! Wah, he was traumatized completely... Haha. We didnt "kiss" cause he was so paisei. I'm very "sporting" ok. I 主动 ask him to bite the chocolate piece from my mouth. Haha. Funny.
Then, they passed me the Birthday Card - A bear-bear card. We shared the cakes.
Thats all.

Very funny birthday. Very special 21st Birthday. People say u must do something extraordinary on your 21st birthday. But I think this is very special and very "realistic" birthday. Never feel so special and definitely will never have the chance to experience this kind of funny birthday again. Glad to celebrate my 21st birthday with RAGGERS 07/08.

handphone

This year is the first time I celebrated my birthday without handphone since I got a handphone in Sec 5. Bet my friends sent me birthday wishes, especially ZeGanG. But, so sorry, I cant get those messages since my handphone still under repair...
Really appreciate if you all sent birthday wishes to me. Will reply once my phone is fixed...

Guess mom also sent me birthday wishes, sms I mean. Received her message from msn too when I got back from RAG around 2. Think I'm still very tied to mom's apron string. Miss her. And also from my brother and sister too. Vince is the only one who was still online when I come back form RAG. Haha. Glad that got ppl to chat to when I came back, or else, think I'll be very dissapointed lor... haha =p as if =p. Chatted for a while before I decided to go bath and sleep. Yeah, I'm totally stinks when chatting with him. =p

Its really a wonderful birthday. The most memorable 21st birthday!

3 months Holiday

Applied for Assistant Chief Engineer for the coming RAG Committee... means my holiday plan is definitely gone already.

Initially, I planned to go outing with friends. To Damai (another Damai trip? haha), or to Gading (what a 'memorable' trip back there), or to KK (wanted to go for so long already... but, long-distance trips always don't work out, do they?), or go yam cha or just gather at Wai Leng or Elaine's house to chat and gossip? Sounds so fun... Ohya, need to change/cancel off my air tickets also >.<

RAG... nothing to say. Just do my (our) best this year. Really 妙想天开 to expect to be at the same level as last year. But I'm ready to devote my whole holiday to help put this year's standard as close as possible to last year's. Hopefully, physically if not mentally.

... how if this year's... don't dare to think. Very 心酸 by just watching the video of '05's RAG, where everyone crying after result announced...

... a bit scared...

...

ohya, this years theme: passion, spirit
