Political Demise of Lee Kuan Yew

Just some random thoughts of mine after reading The GE 2011 Political Demise of Lee Kuan Yew: A Supreme Irony

--

So many seems to lean towards the idea of "end of LKY's era is a new Singapore."

Locals might think that LKY's result-oriented system is heartless, because they never experienced the political/social instability of a third world country, like it neighbouring countries - daylight crime, living in fear-whenever-someone-walk-near-you kind of life... and many more that you cannot imagine..

Best example, watch this video from Facebook. You will NEVER experience this kind of daylight-robbery here in Singapore.

Singapore have achieved first-world standard, and people start wanting more than just stability, and forget the system that served and bring them to where they are now.

LKY may have ruled Singapore with iron fist, but at least he steered Singapore towards 1st-world country.

People complained about the cost of living and housing. Maybe its time for them to travel around to other major cities around the globe and compare the cost of living.

Actually, don't need to travel far, just head 300KM north to KL and take a look at the standard of living - Definitely not first world standard, but beyond the cost of living in Singapre.

Very simple illustration. KL average salary of < RM2000, with plain chicken rice of > RM5; Singapore average salary of >$2000, and still can get chicken rice of < $3.

Be grateful of the luxury of what you have.

Its always easier to sit back and criticize. Take a look around you. You'll appreciate the systematic, result-oriented system that you have.

On another note, saw a comment on “young and restless, who think mainly of themselves”.

Couldn't agree more. Teenagers nowadays are brave and individualistic. The don't think about the consequences and the butterfly effects of their action.

Take some of the recent (growing number) of cases of suicide incident happened (around the world). Example here. You'll see that there are many youngster agree that we must respect suicider's action.

Just one simple question: "Do your parents give birth to you just for you to end it lightly?" or maybe re-phrase it in this way: "Do you want your child to do the same thing?"

Just few cents of mine.

  2. Achievement in the sense of:

    - lowest crime rate in the world,
    - lowest political corruption in government,- equality of ethic groups,- high standard of living.
Yes, those are the basic/foundation elements for a country that I'll appreciate most. Without all these, a country can never advance forward. And all these requires a very systematic society and system in order to achieve.Singapore and Malaysia both achieved independence at the same time. But in terms of basic necessity of living, safety in particular, no doubt Singapore is way, way, way ahead.Maybe its just what we are looking for in life are different. Maybe its because Singaporeans start looking for more than just basic necessities in life.
But still, maybe you are right, if I grow up in Singapore, maybe I'll feel differently ;)
